WHERE TO STAY:

In 1919, the Faessler family started a hotel in Ofter-schwang, Germany, that still exists. Sixty years later, the same family brought their upscale German bed-and-breakfast model to the U.S., starting the Sonnenalp in Vail. Since then, the hotel has become an institution, and is one of the oldest family-run businesses in the region. It has a spa with all the bells and whistles, but the highlight might be its breakfast: a smorgasbord of fresh fruit, eggs, and pastries.
